Dr. Miller recommends keeping track of these triggers in a journal to help you pinpoint what contributes to a headache when one occurs.
These are some common headache triggers:
• Stress and emotional factors: Negative feelings combined with stressful situations are among the top contributing factors for headache pain. In addition, even highly exciting experiences may cause a headache to occur.
• Food substances: A number of food additives are known headache triggers. Two of the primary culprits are MSG, often found in soy sauce, and various packaged foods; and sodium nitrite, a commonly used preservative in processed meats and hot dogs. Another is tyramine, an amino acid found in chocolate, ripened cheeses, and pickled/fermented foods.
• Home and garden cleaning products and chemicals: Fumes from these products can often trigger a headache. It is a good practice to wear a mask and work in a well-ventilated area if you use any of these toxic products.
